Walking In The Air (from: The Snowman) And Random Thoughts On Dated Things

I loved The Snowman movie when I was a kid. I think it was the magical idea of stuff that only happens to kids, after parents think you're long asleep. Like the BFG by Roald Dahl.

But when I watched this movie with my kiddos, they couldn't care less. It was too dated for them, I think--though they've watched their share of movies and television from the eighties and even back a few decades, and loved that. My oldest devoured the old Twilight Zone episodes.

This weekend, we watched a nineties movie where the dad character was going to great lengths to find a popular toy for his kid. My daughter huffed. "What's his issue? Doesn't he know you can just order it off the internet?"

How about you, fellow Sleutheri? Are there movies or books that you loved that now seem dated to kids? Ones that held up?

  1. Fleur, thanks very much for posting about "The Snowman". I hadn't seen it before and now I that I have I really liked it and the music is great too. I think the 1990s movie you are referring to is Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Jingle All The Way" that was a hit among kids in India, thanks to Turbo-Man. We saw it on television, though. The family enjoys watching comedies together and the kids identify with Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, Charles Chaplin, and the early British sitcoms as well as my wife and I do.

  2. Yeah, that was Jingle All the Way :-) Funny how dated it felt, though we still enjoyed the slapstick-type fun.

My kids love comedies. They're loving the stand-up comedian movies with Kevin James or Adam Sandler in it. Guess comedy is universal and timeless :-)

  3. You never know. My six-year old grandson loves HOME ALONE, which seems dated to me.

  4. My kids love that one too. You're right: there's no way to tell.

  5. Last year I bought Elizabeth the complete H.R. Pufnstuf, figuring that if she didn't like it at least Kelly and Amy would enjoy it. Elizabeth loved it as did Kelly. He said Amy just kept shaking her head and saying, "But it doesn't make any sense."

Lizzie has pretty wide-ranging tastes, which is great. I keep wanting to show her Shirley Temple movies, but I'm afraid the black and white might not fly. We'll see.

  6. Wow, I missed H.R. Pufnstuf altogether... I'll have to give it a try :-)
